Royal Roads University will commemorate Orange Shirt Day, to create awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of Indian residential schools, with an online panel discussion Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 10:30 a.m.

“Orange Shirt Day commemorates the residential school experience, witnesses and honours the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and commits us all to the ongoing process of reconciliation,” says Royal Roads President Philip Steenkamp. “I look forward to an engaging session.”

The panel will be moderated by Asma-na-hi Antoine, Royal Roads’ lead in Indigenous engagement.

“Orange Shirt Day is an example of reconciliation. On this day, we heighten the awareness of not just the history, but the impact of the residential school system had on Indigenous people. Each day, I am healing inter-generational trauma, and on September 30, I wear an orange shirt that honours my parents' and grandparents' voices,” says Antione. “Each day, I am grateful I can use my voice and demonstrate resiliency. I am fortunate to work at RRU with a family who understands the importance of daily recognition by working and learning together. I am looking forward to discussing the examples of how we are making change and taking action towards reconciliation and the Indigenization process.”

Please make plans to join panelists Susan Gee, Vice-President of Communications and Advancement; Roberta Mason, Associate Vice-President of Student and Academic Services; Kyla Mcleod, Director of Student Services; Russ Johnston, Indigenous Education Advisor and Frankie Allen, Indigenous Student Services Coordinator, for the discussion.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to wear orange shirts; however, this year Royal Roads will not produce new ones to prevent clothing waste.
