Peter Robinson is an exceptional leader and an influential humanitarian. His concern for peace and justice combined with an ongoing commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability have led to successes both inside and outside the business world.
Mr. Robinson began his career as a park ranger during which time he was twice decorated for bravery by the Governor General of Canada. He joined BC Housing in the 80's, eventually becoming its Chief Executive Officer. In May 2000, he took the helm of Mountain Equipment Co-op, Canada's largest outdoor equipment retailer. Under his leadership, the organization adopted a progressive policy on corporate social responsibility and donated millions of dollars to environmental causes.
In January 2008, Mr. Robinson will assume the position of CEO of the David Suzuki Foundation, an internationally respected science-based organization working to protect the balance of nature and quality of life.
Mr. Robinson monitored prison conditions in Rwanda for the International Red Cross in 1998 and continues to lead a team that monitors detained asylum seekers in Canada. These experiences led him in 2000 to pursue a Master of Arts in Conflict Analysis and Management at Royal Roads University.
Mr. Robinson has other ties to the university. He was appointed to the Board of Governors in June 2004 and, a generation ago, his father - also named Peter Robinson - attended Royal Roads Military College.
Throughout his career and life, Mr. Robinson has demonstrated the value of progressive management, empowering leadership and commitment to sustainability - the same principles embraced by Royal Roads University as it serves the learning needs of a changing world.
On September 14, 2007, Mr. Robinson's peers on the Board of Governors elected him as Chair of the Board. Today we are proud and happy to welcome him as the University's third Chancellor. It gives me great pleasure to present Mr. Peter Robinson to be invested with the Chancellor's duties and robes of office.
