Citation for Anne Golden

Royal Roads University bestows an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree upon Dr. Anne Golden in recognition of her national leadership in public policy and corporate responsibility.  Dr. Golden is a fine role model to our learners, combining as she does a questing mind and business sensibility with social responsibility.

Dr. Anne Golden was already a national figure in public policy, business and academics when she assumed her current role as president and CEO of The Conference Board of Canada nearly four years ago. The conference board is a not-for-profit organization recognized as Canada’s most influential, independent source of insights for leaders. It builds leadership capacity by sharing perspectives on economic trends, public policy and organizational performance. In her role with the conference board Dr. Golden has helped bring forward an agenda of corporate responsibility and public accountability to the nation’s business community.

For nearly 14 years Dr. Golden led the United Way of Greater Toronto, where she became a prominent advocate of urban policy aimed at resolving the pressing social issue of homelessness. She has advised mayors, premiers and cabinet ministers and continues to provide policy advice to local, national and international organizations.

Last year, Dr. Golden received the Urban Leadership Award for City Engagement from the Canadian Urban Institute and a national top-100 award by the Women’s Executive Network. The National Post newspaper ranked her one of Canada's brightest and best women executives in 2003 and 2004. Two years ago, Dr. Golden’s commitment to social justice was recognized when she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.

Royal Roads University is pleased that Dr. Golden joins our community of alumni as we celebrate our tenth anniversary as a university dedicated to excellence and innovation in post-secondary education. Royal Roads − with our own focus on leadership and social responsibility − deeply appreciates the work of Dr. Anne Golden and is pleased to recognize her exemplary and ongoing contributions to public discussion and social action.
