PCS wins innovation and collaboration award

Royal Roads University’s Professional and Continuing Studies has won a Contract Training Award for Innovation and Collaboration from the Learning Resources Network (LERN), the largest association in lifelong learning in the world. The award was only one of five given by LERN and highlighted the work that PCS has done in partnering with the JOEY Restaurant Group to co-create and co-deliver the JOEY School of Leadership and Hospitality Bootcamp.

In 2019, RRU and JRG worked collaboratively to design and deliver the JOEY School of Leadership and Hospitality program. The bootcamp-style program was designed specifically to bring all managers up to the same level of knowledge in specific topic areas, and to work with them to build the learning from the program into their daily routines. The program was co-created and delivered by JOEY leaders and PCS facilitators (Dr. Guy Nasmyth and Cheryl Fitzpatrick) and covered topics that included:

  • Finance Without Fear
  • Culinary Craftsman Tools
  • The Business of Bar and Company Pillars
  • Systems Thinking
  • Change Leadership
  • Employment Branding
  • Marketing and Communications
  • Facilities and Operations
  • Innovation and Creativity

When asked why they chose Professional and Continuing Studies (PCS) at Royal Roads University as a partner for their training and development needs, JOEY Restaurant Group (JOEY) shared it was because of the university's willingness to work with them to design courses specific to the company’s needs.

Right from the get-go, RRU was excited to work with our internal professionals to build content that fit for our people and our culture. We have been working with RRU for over 8 years and what makes them such a great partner is their ability to bring an academic approach that doesn’t feel rigid or stuck in the traditional ways of offering education. RRU continues to make learning fun while ensuring that content is one hundred percent applicable to the real world. JOEY has a young demographic and our managers are used to working in busy restaurants. The idea of sitting in a classroom all day was daunting for some of our people. After working with RRU and getting to experience their dynamic and engaging teaching style, it is evident that we have found a great partnership that fits for our company. 

When we first embarked on our journey with RRU, we were aiming to elevate the level of training and education offered to our managers. We wanted to offer education taught by professionals in the field, and we wanted our programs to hold a level of credibility. Working with RRU has exceeded our expectations – in both content and facilitation. The professors are always extremely knowledgeable in their field, and the content is current and specifically curated to target what our managers need. Working with RRU and offering programs to our managers has changed the stigma of education from being a ‘must do’ to education being a ‘want to do’ in our company. Our employees are excited to take part in the RRU courses and they are proud of the partnership. We’ve worked with many consultants in the past that deliver an off-the-shelf training program with no consideration of the audience. The experience of working with RRU is quite the opposite. The team is made up of true experts that listen to our needs and deliver a product that is world class and tailored to fit for us.
