The director of Indigenous engagement builds strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders through a wide range of channels. This includes serving as our liaison with our Heron People Circle members and local Chiefs, Councils, and communities.

The director develops and delivers on an Indigenous engagement strategy. This strategy focuses on internal and external stakeholders and our commitment to Indigenous Peoples to implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and honour the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Additional responsibilities include:

• planning and overseeing the university’s National Indigenous Peoples Day signature event
• visually representing Indigenous culture on campus and online
• participating as a member of the Research Ethics Board
• acting as our subject matter expert for local Indigenous protocols

Asma-na-hi is Royal Roads University’s director of Indigenous engagement. Prior to this, she worked for six years as Indigenous education and student services manager. Asma-na-hi Antoine is from the Toquaht Nation of the Nuu-chah-nulth Lands and has resided in Lekwungen (Songhees) and Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) traditional Lands for almost two decades.

Asma-na-hi is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Theory and Practice at Simon Fraser University. She has a Master of Education in Psychology and Leadership Studies specializing in Indigenous Community Counselling as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care with a Minor in Indigenous Studies, both from the University of Victoria.
