Duplicate Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson's motto on display at Royal Roads
Completed: September 2011
"Duty is the great business of a sea officer: all private considerations must give way to it however painful it is."
The original brass letters on the plaque displaying the famous quotation of Admiral Lord Nelson were cut out in the college engineering shop and the work was done (as punishment) by cadets in the 1940s. This plaque hung above the entrance to the Grant Block from its early days as cadet block of HMCS Royal Roads until the closure of Royal Roads Military College in 1995. The original plaque is currently displayed in the naval museum at CFB Esquimalt. A duplicate copy was skilfully crafted by Fleet Maintenance Facility (FMF) service people at the base and presented for display at Royal Roads University at an official ceremony during Homecoming Weekend 2011.
