Sun Hyung Kim - BA in International Hotel Management
My time at Royal Roads University was short and sweet, but very memorable. I made the decision to enrol in the BA in International Hotel Management program while I was completing my Hotel and Restaurant Management diploma at Douglas College in Vancouver. I was attracted to the BA in International Hotel Management program at Royal Roads because of its condensed one-year structure. Moving out on my own made me a little nervous because English is my second language and I was not familiar with Victoria, but I’m glad I made the move.
My experience at Royal Roads was amazing. Although I had visited the campus the previous summer, I did not remember it to be so beautiful.
While I wasn’t sure if I needed to complete more schooling after my diploma at Douglas College, I now realize that I wasn’t ready to go into the real world of business before finishing a BA in International Hotel Management at Royal Roads. The courses in this program cover many different topics such as finance, human resources, sustainability, globalization, strategy, leadership, culinary tourism, entrepreneurship, ethics, multicultural management, and IT.
There were 26 students in my class and on the first day we were divided into five groups to work on our team assignments. My classmates were great and I learned a lot through teamwork with them. Although I have only just begun my internship, the teamwork learning has already proven useful.
I now feel more confident than ever before. With the help of Margaret Doyle, Internship Coordinator, I was able to improve my job application, interview, and social media networking skills as well as prepare an internship plan and SWOT analysis for my organization.
I have learned how to manage businesses and provide services from several different perspectives. Currently I am completing an internship at the Coast Plaza Hotel and Suites in Vancouver. I am thrilled to be stepping into the hospitality industry and will apply what I’ve learned in the program at Coast Plaza and beyond.
