Royal Roads was my plan A. My work experience has always been in team environments and I feel that I learn best from colleagues I work with rather than from guidance. I knew that I would receive a high calibre of education at Royal Roads. Moreover, it’s a practical learning environment.
I had high expectations of who would be in the classroom and who would teach. We’ve had some excellent instructors. And the diverse ages in the classroom. You may be sitting next to someone who’s owned seven businesses and who has experienced things you never have.
I’ve learned a lot about myself and basically been able to develop my reactions to situations. It takes a lot of patience because people are very individualistic and their perceptions have to be moulded into one. Being able to communicate effectively is key. I’ve learned to communicate my thoughts concisely and professionally through presentations and facilitating questions, to get my point across in two sentences. For everything that you write, there’s a desired reaction and I’ve been really able to develop and hone those communication skills.
Being in groups and changing cohorts is a fantastic idea. I’ve met some great, great people here. Of the 130 people who go here full time, I can honestly say that I could be stuck in a room with any of them and still enjoy myself. When one person from a group is organizing something, it’s always open to everybody.
There’s networking here. I know that people in past programs have gotten together to do business. It’s definitely possible. I was really fortunate to make two really good girlfriends here, which is very important to me, because I plan to live in the Vancouver region. And we’ve become very close.
It’s been relationship-building, for sure. There are a couple of people I’ll keep in contact with just to see what their plans are in the next couple of years, and vice versa because we know each other’s strengths.
The reasons I chose RRU in the beginning are why it all worked out in the end...
