Julie Misquitta - MA in Intercultural and International Communication (MAIIC)
The program has made me think about the things I do on a daily basis in a different way and I know that I am a better communications professional as a result.
I’m a captain in the army with a strong background in artillery, parachuting, and a mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Since becoming a public affairs officer over five years ago, I am convinced that what I do does make a difference. I am deeply committed to training soldiers about media, media about soldiers and improving public understanding about our Canadian Forces. Stationed in Toronto, I am the director of communications for the greater Toronto area including Etobicoke, Mississauga and Barrie Ontario.
Previously, I’ve taken the public affairs courses offered by both the Canadian and American forces and I’ve recently completed my MA in Professional Communications. In three years I expect to retire from the military, after 20 years of service, and hope to teach at the college level.
Why Royal Roads University?
I did a lot of online research into master’s programs in communication. I searched through distance learning programs from the United States, Britain and Australia. What drew me to the RRU program was the interesting course curriculum and the unique international and intercultural specialization. I don’t think anyone else in the world offers a program like this.
This specialization is important because Canada, and in particular Toronto, has a very rich ethnic population. As well, the World Wide Web is enabling us to communicate with people regardless of their geographic locations around the world. I think we are all heading in the direction of international communications in one way or another.
Today, I am proud to be an MA graduate of Royal Roads. The program has changed the way I look at my daily routine and I know that I am a better communications professional as a result.
