Danielle Backman, MSc Environment and Management
Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Danielle Backman, with support from the Revelstoke Community Forest Corp. and thesis supervisor, Rod Negrave, will be conducting research in a number of harvested areas north of Revelstoke, BC.
She is interested in measuring the growth response of Western redcedar in various openings and along a soil moisture gradient. This information will be used to improve industry understanding of how growth trends may be influenced by harvesting activities as the local climate changes. Potential benefits from this study include: increased regional knowledge in the Columbia Mountains as it pertains to forest management and a changing climate; development of recommendations for future cutting, including adaptive forest planning; and information sharing between community forests within the province.
