Chris Locker – BA in Justice Studies
In Chris Locker’s career as an arborist, he frequently dealt with conflict situations between private and commercial stakeholders and municipal bylaw agents. Although he was able to handle most disputes, he often wondered how a justice degree with a dispute resolution component could assist in his professional development. This led him to pursue a BA in Justice Studies from Royal Roads University.
“Royal Roads and the Justice Studies program exceeded my expectations and my campus experience was second to none – not to mention the beautiful setting,” says Locker, a Victoria native who graduated in 2011. “Before starting the program, I envisioned myself learning some great alternative dispute resolution techniques and gaining a solid understanding of the Canadian justice system, however, I was in for much more.”
Locker says the program covered many aspects of law, including international issues, public policy and legal philosophy, giving him a well-rounded experience.
“The program took many twists and turns, which at times was difficult, but manageable,” he recalls. The curriculum does provoke a degree of self assessment and does reveal some very interesting insights along the way. Because of this I do feel my outlooks are more analytical and I find myself reflecting on the curriculum I learned and applying that to new information in my life.”
Locker says one must work hard to succeed in the program, but the rewards are immense. And when students get stressed out, there are many places on campus to restore one’s peace of mind.
“I accessed the campus recreation centre on a weekly basis throughout my learning journey, which, in conjunction with trail walks and beautiful scenery, provided a good stress relief at times.”
Now, instead of continuing to work as an arborist, Locker is pursuing further education, possibly at an international law school.
“I would have never imagined pursuing a law degree before my experience at RRU. The knowledge gained in my program has given me the confidence to pursue further education and my BA in Justice Studies from RRU has been well received abroad.”
