I like the interdisciplinary aspect of the RRU program...
I have a fish and wildlife diploma from BCIT. Before coming to Royal Roads, I conducted watershed education tours in North Vancouver at the Seymour watershed, mainly for kids between six and 12 but also for adults and for ESL students.
I like the interdisciplinary aspect of the RRU program. You get a broad knowledge set. When you leave, you’re not a biologist, you’re not a hydrologist, but you know something of everything. There’s certainly a demand for people who aren’t specialized in one specific thing and can put a bunch of different ideas together.
I’ll probably use what I learned about project management most. I had not been exposed to the whole idea of risk management and laying out project structures. It’s an actual science, it’s not something that you do off the cuff.
When I enrolled in RRU, I expected a small school, an intimate setting with lots of one-on-one time, and I was happy to see that’s exactly the way it turned out. I got to know my teachers. I was surprised by the emphasis on the arts and how much there was behind sustainability issues.
Being able to complete a degree in one year is huge. Most other schools don’t honour your credits as much as one would hope. I felt my existing education was valued here.
My BSc from Royal Roads has served me well since graduation. I find the business and presentations skills particularly useful. I am currently in my second year of law school at the University of British Columbia and I am planning to go into private business after graduation.
