Bio (Valerie Sheppard)
Tourism and Hospitality Management
Valerie Sheppard joined Royal Roads in 2009 as an associate faculty member in the Faculty of Management, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. Her research interests are focused on community resilience, governance, sustainability, corporate social responsibility and ethics.
Sheppard draws upon her professional experience working in the for-profit, not-for-profit and government sectors to consult with businesses and communities interested in sustainability and resilience-enhancing strategies. Her consulting work also extends to corporate social responsibility planning and programming and corporate governance reviews. Sheppard is a field notes editor with the Journal of Ecotourism and a submission reviewer for Tourism in Marine Environments and the Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing.
Sheppard holds a PhD in the Environment from Simon Fraser University. She also holds a Master of Arts, with distinction, in Recreation and Leisure Studies and an Honours Bachelor of Tourism Studies from Brock University, awarded with first class standing. She was the Dean’s medal recipient, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, as well as the Distinguished Tourism Graduating Student. She also holds an Advanced Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from Brock University.
