Bio (Ted Noakes)
Ted Noakes is a scholar-practitioner in the fields of financial advisement, investing and insurance. As a financial advisor, he helps clients shape investment portfolios and craft proper insurance strategies to ensure goals are achieved efficiently and effectively. As an instructor, he has contributed to a number of post-secondary textbooks on investing and has conducted and presented research on the effectiveness of different delivery methods, such as the “flipped classroom.” He has also worked with colleagues to integrate social media to create a more effective and dynamic classroom environment. His research interests include financial planning, financial literacy, social media in the classroom, passive investing, pricing behaviour and cryptocurrency.
Noakes has worked in the tourism industry with Rocky Mountaineer Rail Tours and the Fairmont Empress. More recently, Noakes has served as an instructor in the Faculty of Finance for the JR Shaw School of Business at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, where he taught economics, investments and financial planning. He has also taught at Camosun College and the University of Victoria. Noakes also maintains a practice as a financial security advisor while teaching finance and business.
Noakes holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Economics from the University of British Columbia (2001) and a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Victoria (2005.) He has also earned the Chartered Investment Manager designation and the Financial Planning Standards Council Level 1 certificate. Noakes received a Teaching Excellence nomination at NAIT in 2013. In 2015, he was recognized as the Forecaster of the Year by the CFA Society Edmonton.
