Bio (Mike Thompson)
Mike Thompson is academic lead for management consulting in the Master of Business Administration program and for the MBA final residency. He was instrumental in forging the highly successful alliance between Certified Management Consultants (CMC) Canada and the Faculty of Management at Royal Roads to establish the Management Consulting stream within the MBA program. Thompson teaches the Advanced Strategic Integrated Practice course, which involves the delivery of live case studies using problem based learning. He also teaches strategy for the Bachelor of Commerce program. Thompson is the co-author of Business Diagnostics, which introduces business owners through a pragmatic and effective “size up” process. He also co-authored Tourism Business Diagnostics. Thompson is actively involved in the Victoria technology community.
Prior to Royal Roads, Thompson was senior manager, business development for TD Commercial Banking. With more than 20 years banking and management consulting experience, he is currently a trustee representing CMC Canada in the International Council for Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI). In 2013, he was awarded the ICMCI Academic Fellow designation for his commitment to the field of Management Consulting education. Thompson is a former director and vice-chair of the Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre and a past director and board member of the Innovation and Development Corporation at the University of Victoria.
Thompson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics (Hons) from the University of Manchester (1971). He holds professional certifications including the Fellow of Institute of Canadian Bankers (FICB) and Fellow Certified Management Consultant (FCMC) as well as a diploma in land economics from the University of British Columbia (1990). Thompson is also a visiting professor at the Grenoble Graduate School of Business.
