Bio (Don Barrie)
Tourism and Hospitality Management
Don Barrie’s instructional background includes adventure tourism/outdoor recreation (Thompson Rivers University), commercial recreation (Vancouver Island University) and hospitality and event management (Selkirk College). In 2012, Don taught tourism/hospitality courses in China at the Nanjing Institute of Industry Technology. He has developed the Business of Tourism and Social Entrepreneurship courses for Royal Roads University. As a long-time tourism operator and consultant, Barrie’s areas of interest include entrepreneurship, sustainable tourism and destination marketing and development. He is also a tourism practitioner and avid outdoorsman and has owned and operated a kayak tour company, an eco-lodge, and a white water kayaking school.
Barrie is a tourism consultant and contract instructor. He previously worked as a senior account executive for the Victoria Conference Centre, where he solicited, sold and contracted more than 600 events. He was an owner/operator of Warm Rapids Inn & Kayak Centre and Blazing Paddles Kayaking, tour director with Tauck World Discovery and ski program representative with Cartan Tours. Barrie also led all marketing and research activities for the destination marketing organization (DMO) Tourism Cowichan.
Barrie holds a MA in Tourism Management from Royal Roads University, a Certificate in Business Administration from University of Victoria and a Travel Counsellor Certificate from Camosun College. Barrie is a certified Learning Facilitator and kayaking coach with CanoeKayak Canada, Canada’s national sport organization for paddle sports. Barrie is also a Certified Sales Professional (CSP) through the Canadian Professional Sales Association. He is undertaking his Doctor of Education (EdD) at the University of Liverpool.
