Carla Funk

Business

Dr. Carla Funk started her career working in a famine in Ethiopia, later focusing on food security issues in Zimbabwe and education in Switzerland. In BC, she has worked with environmental, health research, children’s health and First Nations organizations. She is dedicated to understanding ways for nonprofit organizations to become resilient and thrive. Her areas of focus include philanthropy, organizational management, market-based solutions, and governance and leadership. She actively works towards honing a global network of knowledge-sharing and mobilization in international development and is fascinated by the complexities of creating learning organizations.

 

Experience

Funk is president and CEO of Transform International Canada, a non-profit working with community partners in eight countries. She also works locally at the Islands Trust Conservancy of BC. Funk studied private aid in Tanzania, partially examining how donor decisions influence nonprofits. She completed a partnership with Development Action Canada, translating her doctoral research into leadership skills training workshops that have been conducted at a national level in Canada and used in five African countries. Funk authored “Doing Good for Business – the inclusion of philanthropy in the Canadian professional advisor business practice” after completing research on behalf of the Canadian philanthropic sector.
