Bio (Axel Hovbrender)
Axel Hovbrender is a dynamic, progressive leader and educator possessing advanced operational, managerial and executive skills with experience working with First Nations, unions, government and resource industries. As the president of Eitzen & Associates Consulting, he has worked on several projects involving strategic planning, public safety policy development and labour relations/organizational development. Hovbrender’s research focus is strategic thinking, planning, change management, interest-based conflict resolution and public policy development.
As a consultant, Hovbrender has worked with the Nisga’a Valley Health Authority, the Health Sciences Association, COPE 378, the Overwaitea Food Group and the UFCW 1518 among others in developing strategic plans, creating an interest-based labour relations climate and providing strategic and operational leadership education. Prior to forming his consultancy, Hovbrender was the director of the Police Academy and a member of the Vancouver Police Department where he served on national and international committees on organized crime, national security, strategic human resource management and police education. Hovbrender led teams in several areas as a supervisor, manager and executive officer.
Hovbrender holds a Bachelor of General Studies from Simon Fraser University (1996) and Master of Arts in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University (2003) where his thesis examined performance measures for police organizations. He was invested as a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Services in 2005 for his contribution to a wide variety of police and public safety issues that resulted in improved police-community partnerships and increased safety for vulnerable victims.
