Light Up Purple for World Mental Health Day – October 10, 2017

World Mental Health Day is an initiative of the World Federation of Mental Health. It is intended to drive global mental health awareness, education and advocacy. Light Up Purple is an initiative of the Amanda Todd Legacy Society, which was founded by Carol Todd in memory of her daughter Amanda. Amanda Todd took her life on October 10, 2012, after years of suffering from mental health related symptoms due to bullying, cyber abuse, and harassment. On October 10, we honour those who struggle with mental illness while working to remove the social stigma around it. Royal Roads students can access support and assistance with their mental health through the Royal Roads website. Royal Roads staff and faculty can access support through Alive@Work, and our Human Resources Department.

DAG will ask students, faculty and staff to share selfies wearing purple clothing, or anything purple, and to tag our social media with their photos.

Early on-campus promotion: DAG will be creating awareness among our on-campus student population as well as faculty and staff by hosting an info-table at our annual Campus Connect event on October 4, 2017. We have ordered purple glow bracelets and will be creating small handouts with information about World Mental Health Day – we will also have markers available for people to make purple nametags and talk about World Mental Health Day.

World Mental Health Day On-Campus: We will host four different lunchtime events on October 10 which align to four components of wellness; mental, spiritual, social and emotional:

1. Wellness Walk in the Gardens

Where: Meet at Library Entrance

When: 12:15 p.m. - 1 p.m.

Join RRU’s passionate and talented gardener, Paul Allison, for a relaxing and informative walk through the gardens. Paul will demonstrate that by being mindful of our relationship with nature, we can analyze and improve our wellbeing. 

2. Cards of Compassion (& Cookies!)

Did you know that sending a note of appreciation to someone can actually boost the emotional and social well-being of both the giver & the receiver? Send a card to someone you think could use some support, or to someone you wish to thank for something in your life. This is a drop-in event.

Where: LIC Main Floor Lounge

When: 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

We will be providing a makerspace with blank cards, as well as a variety of pre-made cards and RRU Postcards for you to use. All postage will be complimentary and there will be a mail drop-box provided.

RRU’s Student Counsellors will be your table hosts and available for questions.

 3. Work-Life-Study Balance

Finding a balance between jobs, classes, and our lives outside of work and school can be challenging. Come and talk about what finding balance means to you, and what others have done to find that balance in their own lives! This is a drop-in event, and will be lightly facilitated.

4. Yoga on Campus

The practice of yoga helps to align physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Yoga is held in the RRU recreation centre three times a week, and is free for members and RRU students! Join a #LightUpPurple class on October 10th.

Where: Recreation Centre

When: 12:10 p.m. - 1 p.m.

This class is taught by Kate Landris and is suitable for all levels of fitness - come prepared to sweat, but know that you can take a break and just breathe any time you need to!
