Royal Roads installs President Steenkamp at 45th Convocation

Royal Roads University celebrates the installation of Dr. Philip Steenkamp as president and vice-chancellor at Spring 2019 Convocation June 18. The university will also honour the achievements of 648 graduates.

Steenkamp will take the university president’s oath of office from the Honourable Janet Austin, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, during the afternoon Convocation ceremony.

“It is a genuine pleasure to share the stage with these graduates as I am installed as president and vice-chancellor of Royal Roads University,” says Steenkamp. “Our graduates are both shaped by and shape this university and its impact on British Columbia, Canada and the world. As certain as I am that Royal Roads is the university of the future, I am even more certain these graduates will build that future with wisdom and care.”

During the morning ceremony, Royal Roads will confer an honorary degree on Scia'new Hereditary Chief Burt XEMXIMELEḴ Charles. The Victoria Women in Need Community Cooperative (WIN) will receive the Chancellor’s Community Achievement Award.

“Our honorees, through their legacies and continuing work, help make our communities healthier, more resilient and more inclusive,” says Royal Roads Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors Kathleen Birney. “It’s a privilege to recognize and celebrate XEMXIMELEḴ and WIN at Convocation.”

The university’s 45th convocation will confer degrees, certificates or diplomas in the Faculty of Management, the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences and the College of Interdisciplinary Studies.  The graduates join a community of more than 27,800 alumni worldwide.

The ceremony at 9:30 a.m. honours graduates of the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences.

The ceremony at 2 p.m. celebrates President Steenkamp’s installation and honours graduates of the College of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Faculty of Management.
