President Steenkamp: The stories we tell and the history we teach

I’ve been thinking about the hateful graffiti on our campus and the mark that is left on our minds even though it’s been removed.

In my video this week, I talk about growing up in Africa and the brutalizing, dehumanizing consequences of racism. I also reflect on the ways in which history is often distorted to reinforce dominant narratives and structures.

That’s why the celebration of Black History Month in February each year is so important — it helps us to uncover the hidden history of Black Canadians and to celebrate their achievements and contributions to our country.

It’s a moment for us to listen to those whose families and ancestors lived that history.

I hope you’ll join me for opportunities to learn and listen.
