President Steenkamp: The shadow pandemic

Our homes have become a focus like never before in this pandemic. We’re all spending so much more time at home, whether it’s for work, leisure time or just observing the restrictions designed to keep us safe and healthy.

What feelings does the word “home” evoke for you? For me, it’s a place to relax and unwind, a place where I feel loved, respected and cared for. It is a safe haven. But for many women around the world it can be a place of fear and danger, especially right now as they experience a “shadow pandemic” of increased domestic abuse and violence.

This week, I remember the 14 women killed at l’École Polytechnique in Montréal 31 years ago. The continuing pandemic of gender-based violence demands that we raise our voices and take action to support girls, women and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community around the world who still face discrimination and violence. I hope you’ll join me by adding your voice, whether that’s on social media, in conversation, or working to create safe spaces for those experiencing violence.
