Royal Roads University named AXYS Technologies as recipient of the Internship Employer of the Year Award at its annual Career Development Conference. The company is a leading supplier of remote environmental monitoring solutions for clients needing data from extreme ocean environments around the world. AXYS regularly hosts Royal Roads students in work-integrated learning opportunities. The award was created to recognize outstanding internship employers for the practical learning experiences they provide.

Alberto Callo, director of supply chain and manufacturing for AXYS, accepted the award. Callo says Royal Roads students are contributing valuable work during their internships, and he usually tries to extend the students’ time with the company beyond the internship.

“We usually recruit students to work on projects specific to some improvements we want to make within the company. We choose the students to help us make those improvements, implement them, and from there, they can even potentially stay with the company and have a career,” says Callo.

The opportunity to do meaningful work is a key component of a thriving relationship with an internship employer, and Natasha Dilay, manager of Career Learning and Development at Royal Roads, says that is an important part of why AXYS was selected to receive the award.

“One of the criteria for the Internship Employer of the Year Award is that students are allowed and even encouraged to take be involved with decision-making,” she says. “Our students at AXYS are really integrated into the day-to-day work of the company and have the chance to make a difference during their time there.”

AXYS has now hosted three internship students, and Callo said he would be pleased to continue to welcome more.

“Royal Roads students have given us the resources we need in the growing administration part of the company,” says Callo. “They’re mostly involved in the supply chain process performing procurement, logistics and finance functions.”

The annual conference is organized by Career Learning and Development and features a keynote alumni speaker, expert panel discussions and an afternoon career networking event where students meet with local businesses and potential employers.
