Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Development grants announced
Royal Roads faculty researchers have been awarded four grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
The grants, which total more than $240,000, were awarded through SSHRC’s Insight Program. This program aims “to build knowledge and understanding about people, societies and the world by supporting research excellence.”
Assist. Prof. Runa Das, Insight Development Grant to study energy poverty in Canada
College of Interdisciplinary Studies Assist. Prof. Runa Das has received an Insight Development Grant to study the social dimensions of low carbon energy transitions and how those shifts may affect the energy poor—those who have less access to energy services. The project value is $54,000 with $52,000 awarded by SSHRC.
Das is working with Dr. Mari Martiskainen, University of Sussex research fellow and co-applicant, along with a team of scholars and practitioners.
The two-year project looks to better understand what drives energy poverty and how it’s experienced in Canadian households. The project aims to draw attention to the social implications of the energy transition process.
Assoc. Prof. Mark Lokanan, Insight Development Grant to study the enforcement performance of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC)
School of Business Assoc. Prof. Mark Lokanan has been awarded an Insight Development Grant to study the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada’s (IIROC) enforcement performance. The regulatory body is responsible for policing investment dealers and brokerage firms involved in debt and equity trading in Canada. The project value is $59,000 with the full amount awarded by SSHRC.
Lokanan’s two-year research project will evaluate whether IIROC is able and willing to step in to litigate and prosecute cases of financial misconduct. The study’s findings aim to build the case that the federal government should investigate lax regulatory enforcement.
Canada Research Chair Ash Prasad, Insight Development Grant to explore what motivates diaspora entrepreneurs to return to their country of origin
Ash Prasad, School of Business Canada Research Chair in Innovative Organizational Practice, has been awarded an Insight Development Grant to identify what motivates diaspora entrepreneurs to pursue ventures in their country of origin. The project value is $67,000 with $58,000 awarded by SSHRC.
Prasad is collaborating with Dr. Dulini Fernando, University of Warwick associate professor.
The project will highlight the needs of diaspora entrepreneurs residing in Canada and is part of Prasad’s ongoing work as a Canada Research Chair. The two-year project aims to identify opportunities for entrepreneurs to pursue ventures in Canada while collaborating with organizations in their home country to generate economic advancement in both countries.
Assoc. Prof. Geo Takach, Insight Development Grant to explore how interweaving arts-based research, environmental communication and Indigenous ways of knowing can advance reconciliation with both the environment and Indigenous Peoples
School of Communication and Culture Assoc. Prof. Geo Takach has been awarded an Insight Development Grant to further explore how interweaving arts-based research and Indigenous ways of knowing can help to create communications to encourage environmental reconciliation in Canada and abroad. The two-year project builds on prior work funded by a 2017 SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grant. The project value is $73, 000 with the full amount awarded by SSHRC.
Takach is collaborating with Asma-na-hi Antoine, Royal Roads University Indigenous Education and Student Services manager, along with a planned team of Elders, artists and scholars.
The project explores the need to weave together—rather than merely bridge or integrate—Indigenous and settler knowledges to connect environmental protection and Indigenous reconciliation while motivating people toward respectful and sustainable practices that serve both environmental and social justice.
