Royal Roads welcomes Terrie Klotz as first Chief Human Resources Officer

Royal Roads University is pleased to announce the appointment of Terrie Klotz to the new position of chief human resources officer (CHRO), effective April 16, 2018.

Klotz (formerly Conway) brings to the position more than thirty years of human resources experience in various sectors throughout Canada, including an extensive background in the health and post-secondary sectors.

She joins Royal Roads from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, where she served as associate vice-president, human resources and organizational development. In that role, she provided strategic leadership for human resources and organizational development, including recruitment, benefits, job evaluation, compensation, organization development and faculty and staff relations, among other responsibilities.

Reporting to the vice-president and chief financial officer, CHRO Klotz will provide the strategic direction and leadership for the university’s human resource strategies. The CHRO will provide expertise, leadership, direction and inspiration to the human resources team and oversee the full breadth of human resources functions and services. Klotz will also be responsible for employee recruitment, learning, professional development and support.

Klotz holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria, as well as bachelor degrees in social work and arts from the University of Regina and University of Calgary. Her previous roles include director of human resources and organization development at the University of Victoria as well as director of talent management at the University of Calgary, director of people development at the Calgary Board of Education and multiple human resources roles with Island Health.

“Terrie brings an enormous amount of experience in multiple sectors, with particularly impressive expertise in post-secondary human resources,” says Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Eason. “She will be a valuable asset to the university and an excellent fit for our person-centred approach in every aspect of what we do as an organization.”

A Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) with the Ontario Human Resources Professional Association, Klotz holds a labour relations certificate from Queens University’s Industrial Relations Centre and an executive coach designation from the Leadership Institute of Seattle, Bastyr University.

At Laurentian, Klotz directed the various aspects of human resources and organizational development for a university with more than 850 faculty and staff and a student body of more than 8,500. Her successes include continuous improvement efforts to provide online solutions for human resources transactional services, and key organization development and change initiatives designed to enable organizational goals, such as employee engagement and professional development. She was also responsible for leading bargaining with faculty, teaching assistants and staff and facilitating a positive relationship between the university and staff and faculty unions.
