Royal Roads receives provincial funding to lead study on West Shore post-secondary options

April 17, 2018

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training has announced Royal Roads University will receive $250,000 to lead a group of community partners to prepare a business plan on post-secondary education delivery options in Langford.

The ministry provided the funding in response to a request by the mayor of the City of Langford to explore how best to serve the educational needs of the fast-growing communities of the West Shore.

“Royal Roads is excited to work with the City of Langford, School District 62 Sooke and the ministry, as well as local First Nations communities, UVic, Camosun College and local businesses to develop this report,” says Royal Roads President and Vice-Chancellor Allan Cahoon.

Cahoon says initial research indicates that School District 62 has an excellent graduation rate, but a rate lower than the provincial average for secondary students transferring to university.

“Access, affordability and supportive educational pathways need be improved to increase that transfer rate, especially if the West Shore continues to grow at its current pace,” he says.

Cahoon says the community partners will launch the in-depth planning, engagement and needs assessment study required to build a business case. A final report from the group will be submitted to the ministry this fall.
