Royal Roads Pride Week a vibrant celebration of diversity

July 12, 2018

From an ice cream party to a movie night to participating in Victoria’s Pride Parade, Royal Roads’ Pride Week was a colourful celebration of diversity.

The annual event aims to provide opportunities for education and celebration.

“Pride is an important week,” says Kyla McLeod, director of student services and chair of Royal Roads Diversity Action Group. “Pride allows dedicated time to learn about and celebrate our differences. It also allows us to openly demonstrate our care and appreciation of one another.”

This years’ celebration was bigger than ever, McLeod says. Students, staff and faculty enjoyed activities including the annual Royal Roads Pride Festival, a film screening and Positive Space Network workshops to learn strategies to create a safer and more inclusive environment.

“This year was one of our most successful yet in terms of involvement and engagement with the Royal Roads community,” she says.

Pride Week at Royal Roads is organized by members of the Diversity Action Group, and members of RRU Proud, a network of students, staff and faculty dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Two-Spirit and queer & questioning members of the Royal Roads community.

About 40 members of the Royal Roads community joined about 30,000 LGBTTQ community members and allies to celebrate the end of Pride Week 2018 at the annual Victoria Pride Parade.

While Pride Week may be over in Victoria, Royal Roads’ online and blended communities can still share their Pride experiences in their home communities. The Fifth Annual RRU Proud Photo Contest invites photos from Pride events for all over the country. Tag Royal Roads Student Services in a Facebook Pride selfie using the hashtag #RRUProud. Submissions will be entered in to a draw for a RRU Proud T-shirt. Names will be drawn on July 20, Aug. 20, and Sept. 20.

There are also plenty of ways to stay engaged throughout the year. Learn how you can get involved with RRU Proud or how to join the Positive Space Network.
