Partnership with Study Group supports RRU's international strategy

February 21, 2011

Royal Roads University is announcing a new partnership with Study Group (SG), a recognized leader in international education, to expand its program of international education as part of an overall growth strategy for academic programming.

Under the partnership, highly qualified international students will prepare for entry into Royal Roads University's innovative degree completion programs. Study Group, working with Royal Roads, will establish an academic preparation program including English language training and provide the first two years of selected undergraduate programming, which will allow students to complete undergraduate or graduate degrees at the Royal Roads campus in Victoria, British Columbia.

A new on-campus International Study Centre will be established to offer students the highest levels of support to help them adapt to the Royal Roads approach to integrated and applied learning.

"We live in a globalized world and we need leaders who have the experience of working with people from different cultures and who can deliver opportunities for B.C. and Canada now and into the future," said Royal Roads University President Allan Cahoon. "This strategic partnership allows Royal Roads to further establish itself as an institution that prepares global leaders for the new global economy."

Study Group recruits over 55,000 students annually from 140 countries and works with nearly 200 higher education institutions world wide. Through this partnership, Royal Roads University will be the only Canadian university to be able to offer those students the opportunity for a three-year completion of an undergraduate degree through its accelerated degree completion model. Students will be eligible to enrol in business, tourism, environmental science, justice or communication programs and will also have the opportunity to progress into the university's well recognized graduate programs.

Study Group's Global Chief Executive Officer, Heith MacKay-Cruise, said "Canada represents an important addition to Study Group's presence in English speaking countries. In an increasingly competitive world, this new partnership will support Royal Roads University in achieving its international objectives."

The university has set a five-year goal to increase enrolments by 35 per cent, which will include an additional 1000 students on campus in full time residency by 2016.

"The increase in full-time resident students will offer tremendous benefits both on and off campus. Students will live here for the duration of their education and build professional networks in support of their career goals," said Cahoon. "We will also be expanding our campus to accommodate the needs of our students. This strategy offers a catalyst for continued growth and development."

Royal Roads University was established by the Province of British Columbia in 1995 specifically to deliver quality applied and professional programs to advance professionals in the workplace. The university blends online and on-campus learning with current, real-world relevance for doctorate, graduate and undergraduate degrees, certificates, diplomas, executive and custom education.

Study Group is a global leader in private higher education, language and career education, in North America, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.  Beginning in 1994 with 7,000 students per year, Study Group now provides the highest quality educational opportunities for 55,000 students from more than 140 countries.  Study Group's on-campus programs prepare international students for entry to some of the most prestigious education institutions in the world.
