A prominent Victoria businessman will be the next chancellor of Royal Roads University as it nears its 20th year of operations.

The Royal Roads University Board of Governors has elected Wayne Strandlund as its new chair   beginning in January, 2014. As chair, he also assumes the position of chancellor, the official head of the university.

Strandlund becomes the fifth board chair and chancellor in RRU history, succeeding Dr. J. Peter Meekison, OC, who completes his term this month. Appointed by the BC government, Strandlund has served on the board since July, 2011, during which time he acted as chair of the governance and nominating committee.

“Wayne has been a valued member of the board,” said Meekison. “He is an established local business leader with strong ties to the community, and I am delighted that he has agreed to step into this leadership role.”

Strandlund, 66, is founder and CEO of Fisgard Capital Corporation, a family-run mortgage investment company he founded in 1994.  Born in Saskatchewan, the eldest of eight children, Strandlund earned a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in creative writing from the University of Victoria. Since 1967, his business career has been in real estate and mortgage investment management.

“Wayne has brought a passion for education and philanthropy,” said RRU President and Vice Chancellor Allan Cahoon. “This commitment along with his experience on various community and professional boards impressed the Board of Governors and supported his choice as their incoming chair and chancellor.”

“I am honoured to be chosen for this role,” said Strandlund. “I will do my best to help guide and support RRU’s strong educational contribution to the people of BC.”

Through sponsorship and volunteer commitment, Strandlund maintains his support of arts and culture, as well as education and business.  Wayne is presently a director of the Real Estate Compensation Fund Corporation and a member of the Victoria Symphony Business Advisory Council. He has served as president of the Victoria Real Estate Board, the BC Real Estate Association and the Victoria Conservatory of Music. He is a former member of the Real Estate Council of BC and governor of the BC Notary Foundation, and has represented the real estate industry on the Treaty Negotiations Advisory Committee and the BC Expropriation Association. A founding member of the Canadian College for Chinese Studies, he lectured foreign students on the subject of Canadian securities.
