An indigenized understanding of leadership and sustainability is an emerging competency in demand. A new Royal Roads bachelor’s specialization will help students acquire this competency in a blended format, combining an on-campus residency with online study.

“This new specialization in the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies enables Indigenous students to weave traditional knowledge and western ways of knowing as they work within communities and to integrate cultural knowledge into their studies,” said Asma-na-hi Antoine, Indigenous Education & Student Services Manager at Royal Roads.

“At the same time, the program allows those interested in working with Indigenous communities to develop an understanding of the processes and protocols required to engage in meaningful reconciliation.”

Professionals increasingly find themselves asked to lead change in complex, multi-disciplinary contexts that require understanding of reconciliation, ecological literacy and systems thinking. This trend in the labour market, along with an interest expressed by local and regional Indigenous communities, inspired faculty in leadership studies, environment and sustainability, and interdisciplinary studies to collaborate with the Office of Indigenous Education & Student Services to develop this program offering.

The interdisciplinary and applied focus on leadership for sustainability is a unique specialization, allowing undergraduate students to take advantage of Royal Roads’ long-established expertise in leadership education at the graduate and executive level.

“This program is a response to interest expressed by local and regional communities, and we’re enthusiastic about the potential it holds,” said matthew heinz, dean of the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences.

The leadership for sustainability specialization will be offered for the first time in September 2016. Applications for admission are due in June.
