Can-Am teams come to Royal Roads for International Case Competition

March 16, 2011

Royal Roads University welcomes teams of business students from across Canada and the United States to the 9th Annual Royal Roads University International Undergraduate Case Competition. This year 16 teams will go head to head over three days in front of business leaders to test their skills by providing advice on business cases under the pressure of deadline and with limited access to research.

"This is a marquee event for our students, the Faculty of Management and for the university in general," said Faculty of Management Dean, Pedro Márquez. "For the army of volunteers, the student board, and those who help co-ordinate the competition over the three days, it's an opportunity to show our guests our campus and being part of an elite business skills contest. It doesn't surprise me that we had a waiting list of teams who wanted to participate this year. Our competition gets more popular every year."

Last year's winning university from South Carolina returns their team to defend its title against teams from Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Florida, and Indiana.

Starting the morning of March 17, teams will get three hours to review business cases. Following this intensive preparation, teams will present their recommendations to a panel of judges who will assess their ideas and ask them questions on the strategies they propose. The panel of judges is comprised of more than 50 executives, business owners and managers from Southern Vancouver Island.

The lead sponsor for this year's competition is Western Union Business Solutions, with Certified Management Accountants, VanCity, Heritage Office Furnishings and Vecima Networks also sponsoring this year's event

"Case competitions are intense, but there is no better training for aspiring business leaders," says business professor Don Prescott, who was one of the founders of the case competition at Royal Roads nearly a decade ago. "This kind of competition really forces students to rise to the occasion and the learning they take away from the experience is immeasurable."

The competition culminates on Saturday, when all three finalists will present their last cases of the competition starting at 12:30 p.m. on the Quarterdeck of the Grant Building. These presentations are open to the public.

Royal Roads University was established by the Province of British Columbia in 1995 specifically to deliver quality applied and professional programs to advance professionals in the workplace. The university blends online and on-campus learning with current, real-world relevance for doctorate, graduate and undergraduate degrees, certificates, diplomas, executive, custom and continuing education.
