Book highlights the scholar-practitioner experience
The founding and current program heads for the Doctor of Social Sciences (DSocSci) program have published a book highlighting the value of applied, interdisciplinary research to both the academic and professional spheres.
Applied Interdisciplinarity in Scholar Practitioner Programs: Narratives of Social Change by Professor Bernard Schissel and Assoc. Prof. Siomonn Pulla was published by Palgrave Macmillan earlier this month.
The book highlights the experiences of nine of the first graduates of the program, delving into what it means to be a scholar-practitioner and how academic research can be applied in the workplace.
“This book represents the contributions of working professionals who are doing groundbreaking, applied research,” says Schissel, founding head of the DSocSci program.
Schissel says the graduates profiled are representative of the innovative nature of the DSocSci and its importance to public policy, as well as of the quality of students attracted to the program.
“We hope to support knowledge mobilization about the program and the benefits of applied research, as well as build thought leadership in the field so others can learn from our experiences in creating an applied, scholar-practitioner doctoral program,” says Siomonn Pulla, current program head.
Launched in 2010, the DSocSci program was designed to enable students to “integrate professional experience and academic scholarship to produce policy-relevant research that is written in a widely accessible way,” Pulla and Schissel write in the book’s introduction.
Since its launch, the DSocSci program has produced more than 20 graduates working in wide-ranging fields such as law, political science, the arts, emergency management, business and post-secondary teaching and research itself.
Pulla and Schissel are planning a formal book launch in early spring to coincide with the next on campus residency for DSocSci students.
