Focus on China Photo Exhibit Comes to Royal Roads University

Apr 6, 2010

Victoria, B.C. – An exhibition of photographs depicting the past six decades in China opened today at Royal Roads University in Victoria.

The Focus on China 1949 – 2009 exhibition was produced by China Daily Newspaper and AKD International. The photographs on display were selected from a recently published book featuring 362 images by more than 200 photographers.

“The photographs capture the lives of ordinary people living during extraordinary times,” said Allan Cahoon, president and vice-chancellor of Royal Roads University. “This exhibit is an opportunity for our students and the community at large to explore a period of profound change in China’s history.”

The exhibition, unveiled today on the Quarterdeck of the Grant Building at Royal Roads University, has been travelling across North America, with shows in Toronto, Waterloo, Fredericton, New York, and Washington D.C. Victoria is its final destination.

"We are delighted to be showcasing these historic and meaningful photos to our friends at Royal Roads University," said Andy Truong, Executive Director of AKD International, sponsors of the exhibition in Canada and the United States. “This is a homecoming for us as we are following the path of our earliest great ancestors who came to Victoria over 150 years ago."

China Daily editor ZHU Ling says the shifts that occurred in China over the last six decades are equivalent to more than 200 years of change in other countries. He says that people will see how Chinese life changed in the small details of everyday life when viewing this exhibit.

“We are honoured to be able to bring this exhibit to Royal Roads and to Victoria,” said Cyndi McLeod, vice-president of marketing and business development at Royal Roads University. “This is a celebration of our historic link to China, where RRU has more than 3,000 Chinese MBA graduates. It’s also an opportunity to look forward to our growing relationship with our Asian partners.”

The Royal Roads exhibition of Focus on China 1949 – 2009 is co-sponsored by Royal Tak Ming Institute of Management.

The exhibit is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from April 7 – 11.  Schools and other groups are welcome to experience this exhibit. Groups are asked to contact the university in advance by calling 250-391-2511. Admission is free.
