April 17 - Sustainability at RRU focus of West Shore Earth Day booth
On Saturday, April 17, the West Shore Town Centre at 2945 Jacklin Road in Langford is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with information and displays that promote green living on the West Shore. The Sustainability Office from Royal Roads University will be one of the participants with information about RRU's green activities, the Robert Bateman Centre and more. For more about this event visit the West Shore Town Centre web site.

RRU students organize Earth Day trade show
RRU students are welcoming local businesses that explore the opportunities found in sustainable products or those organizations that help people understand the importance of minimizing humanity's impact on the environment. The CIBC-sponsored trade show takes place on the Quarterdeck of the Grant Building April 22 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Exhibitors include GoBeyond, Level Ground Trading, BC Hydro's PowerSmart, Enviro Gem and more...

Recyclistas to champion bike maintenance at RRU on Earth Day
Students are welcoming Recyclistas to Royal Roads to help promote bicycle use as a low-cost, sustainable commuter option. Recyclistas take donated bikes and bike parts and rebuild them, creating sustainable transportation alternatives. Located on the Galloping Goose Trail near Town and Country Shopping Centre in Saanich, Recyclistas have long been a staple in the bike commuter community in Greater Victoria.  A free maintenance area will be set up outside the Grant Building at the top of the Neptune stairs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on April 22.

Tree planting to mark 40th Earth Day anniversary at RRU
Trees will be planted at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on April 22. Participants are asked to gather on the Quarterdeck. RRU Grounds and Gardens staff will take observers and volunteer helpers to the tree planting location at those times.

Invasive species removal planned for Earth Day
Students and volunteers are asked to gather on the Quarterdeck of the Grant Building at 1:00 p.m. sharp on April 22 before fanning out across the campus to remove invasive species. The focus of this year's clean up will be the plant Daphne.

Students to conduct RRU waste audit
Starting at 3:00 p.m. on April 22, a sample of campus garbage will be dumped in front of the Grant Building (above the Neptune Stairs) and analyzed to determine how effectively Royal Roads University is separating its waste streams to minimize total waste created. Students will be on hand getting their hands dirty and keeping track of organic, recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

RRU campaign to promote tap water
Royal Roads University has decided to champion the use of tap water on campus over buying bottled water. To drive home the point, the film Flow  will be screened in room 228 of the Grant Building at 3:30 p.m. on April 22. The film highlights the growing politicization of water in the modern era. The event is free and free popcorn will be provided along with free tap water.

April 23 - Robert Bateman Earth Day talk fuses art and the environment
Join realist wildlife painter Robert Bateman on Friday, April 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., for the third in a series of Travelogues and Sketchbooks illustrating the spectrum of human and natural beauty he has captured throughout his travels. Through examples of rarely-seen notes and sketches, Canada's most treasured naturalist and artist will hold an armchair talk about how everything is connected. Proceeds from these sessions benefit the Robert and Birgit Bateman Bursary for Environmental Science students at Royal Roads. Cost for this event is $45 plus GST. Register by visiting the Continuing Studies web site, or by calling 250-391-2600 ext. 4801.
