Victoria analysts predict tougher security after Ottawa shootings

Security analysts predict the federal government will move quickly to strengthen anti-terrorist measures in this country because of today’s shootings in Ottawa.

The events, which left one solider and a gunman dead, will change the view of many Canadians that the kind of violence that takes place elsewhere in the world doesn’t happen here.

“The attacks today took place against the heart of the Canadian political system in Ottawa,” Dr. Kenneth Christie, Royal Roads University professor specializing in security, said in an email from Thailand.

As far as citizens’ reaction to the death of a solider today, which saw a gunmen shot dead as well, Christie said: “I think Canadians will be shocked at these acts of violence carried out in the nation’s capital but Canada is a strong, resilient nation and I doubt if this will intimidate most people.”
