Songbird study to support community planning
Royal Roads MSc in Environment and Management student Christopher Stephens and his assistant, Dave Erickson, are hunting for the Swainson's Thrush songbird. The best way to find and track songbirds is when they're singing, and when do birds like to sing?
"4:30 to 8 a.m., four mornings a week," says Stephens with a chuckle, describing their weekly routine since March.
Stephens is studying the relationship between forest patch size and Swainson's Thrush nestsite selection for his master’s thesis under supervisor Jonathan Moran. His work was featured in Parksville’s Oceanside Star.
