Regina researcher studying suicide
It may take four years, but a local researcher is looking forward to sharing what she learns about indigenous youth suicide with the community.
Sarah Abbott, associate professor in the University of Regina’s film department, said she understands that it’s a serious issue and a depressing issue — but that’s what grabbed her interest.
She wants to know more about why indigenous youth are more likely to commit suicide compared to other Canadians. Abbott said, according to the Centre for Suicide Prevention, suicide and self-inflicted injuries are the leading cause of death for First Nations youth and adults up to 44 years of age. She said that is one fact that has compelled her to focus her research on the topic.
