President: Universities adapting to the changing times
Royal Roads University president and vice-chancellor Allan Cahoon published an opinion-editorial piece in the Times Colonist newspaper suggesting that the post-secondary system is challenged on many fronts, but that one of the ongoing challenges is dispelling the old perception that a university education is "elitist, that it's a finishing school full of secret handshakes and robes that operate under the traditions of the past. That it has lost touch with the reality of today." He says that story is an "ancient fable" and that while universities are challenged, they are in fact adapting well to the demands of today's students and societal needs. Citing several examples of institutional adaptations, Cahoon suggests universities just need to do a better job of telling their stories.
