A New Westminster secondary grad now working as a radio journalist in Africa is one of the first recipients of Royal Roads Unviersity's alumni awards.

Mading Ngor came to Canada a a child after his village was destroyed by violent attacks and his father killed during the civil war in Sudan. He graduated from NWSS in 2006 before going on to get a bachelors degree in professional communication from Royal Roads.

After getting his education, Ngor returned to the new country of South Sudan "where he is a fearless radio journalist and a contributor to other media outlets such as Reuters and the Huffington Post," said a Royal Roads press release.

Ngor and one other recipient will be given their award, which was created to honour alumni who have become leaders of change in their communities, at a luncheon in Victoria on Oct. 22. Ngor will also present a lecture, Voices for Freedom, on Oct. 24.
