Economic issues at forefront of Israeli election

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party scored a dramatic election victory surging past its main rival, the Zionist Union, to win most seats in the Knesset on Tuesday.

School of Humanitarian Studies Prof. Kenneth Christie discussed the election and the outcome (before the final results were known) with host Terry Moore on C-FAX.

“The real issues in the election were over the economy. Housing costs, for instance, have soared in Israel,” says Christie. “The whole Palestinian-Israeli peace process, which is essentially broken down, was never really an issue in the election. It seems to have been obscured by pocketbook issues.”
