Cox on tsunami warning system
After a tsunami threat for Vancouver Island early Tuesday morning, some south Island residents were concerned about public warning systems and preparedness.
Disaster and Emergency Management Professor and Program Head, Robin Cox, spoke with Calvin To about the benefits of a tsunami warning siren in Victoria. She advises Vancouver Island residents to see the incident as a lesson in emergency preparedness.
Here is an excerpt:
"We have many examples in other parts of the province and in the world where sirens are used really effectively to warn people. They have to be accompanied by education and awareness campaigns so people understand what the sirens are for and what to do in response to them," Cox says.
