Christie on Turkish military operation against Kurdish forces
Human Security and Peacebuilding Program Head Ken Christie spoke with CFAX 1070’s Adam Stirling about the Turkish military operation against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria after President Trump ordered US troops to pull out of the region.
Here is an excerpt:
“What’s happening is that Donald Trump has decided to withdraw from that part of Syria. He believes, in opposition to most of his generals, that the job has been done. The Kurdish militias were instrumental in defeating ISIS and I don’t think the job could have been done without them, but I don’t think that ISIS has been fully defeated.
He’s now given the green light to the president of Turkey, Erdoğan, to go in there and this will cause an enormous humanitarian disaster. It will probably lead to the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Kurds who have been fighting on America’s side. It’s the worst kind of cold calculated betrayal of your allies and, of course, it will damage America’s standing once again in the region.”
The interview aired on CFAX 1070.
