Human Security and Peacebuilding Program Head Ken Christie spoke with CFAX 1070’s Adam Stirling regarding China and Hong Kong’s relationship and current unrest.

Here is an excerpt:

The Hong Kong economy is not as important to China as it once was. When they handed over the territory in 1997, the territory’s economy was nearly a fifth of China’s, so almost 20 per cent of China’s economy was in Hong Kong.

Today, that figure is only three per cent. Its port is no longer important in shipping goods to the mainland. So, what you’ve seen is China has become far less reliant on Hong Kong because they’ve built up all these new cities…and their economy is very strong. [...] Now what still is important is that China still wants to control Hong Kong in terms of security.

The interview was aired on CFAX 1070.
