Black on federal NDP leader’s Island tour
Can federal New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh convince the Canadian public to vote the NDP into office? Not without a seat in the House of Commons, says School of Communication and Culture Assoc. Prof. David Black.
Black appeared on CHEK News to discuss Singh’s recent visit to Vancouver Island. Singh met with students in Greater Victoria and members of the provincial NDP government.
Singh may appeal to younger voters and those looking for change, Black says, but his first order of business must be winning a seat.
Here is an excerpt:
“‘It’s difficult for any federal leader to introduce themselves to the Canadian public, to demonstrate his chops in Question Period, to be seen to lead the party when you’re on the outside looking in,’ said Black. […]
“‘Given a chance he may well do well but until he’s given a seat his party’s going to be hobbled.’”
