School of Communication and Culture Assoc. Prof. David Black joined Carolina de Ryk on CBC Radio’s Daybreak North to discuss why social media is so powerful in municipal politics.

Here’s an excerpt:

“Personality-based attacks really work at the municipal level because…it’s strongly personality centred…. If you’re in a position of power, you have a visibility that your opponent does not. Attacking personality means you can really reduce the value of incumbency in assisting any candidate to win power again. Secondly, because there isn’t easy access to that left-right spectrum or to bashing the Greens, the Liberals, the NDP, people hone in on personality because that’s what’s left when we clear away all the rest.”
