Recognizing excellence throughout our community
A connection between people, place and purpose has created a vibrant community at Royal Roads. The university is proud to welcome outstanding individuals into that community through the awarding of honorary degrees. Doctor of Laws, honoris causa recipients demonstrate a standard of excellence that inspires graduates and sets an example for positive change in the world.
Recipients showcase achievement in a broad range of areas, including: business, public service, the professions, leisure and the arts, the sciences, voluntary service in the community, or service to the university of long-standing or exceptional merit. Special consideration is given to individuals whose personal qualities and record of achievement relate to Royal Roads’ mission, vision, values, learning and teaching model, or program emphases: sustainable development, entrepreneurship, empowering leadership, conflict analysis and management, or communications. Those that reflect the university’s vision of connecting people, ideas and experiences to change lives and the world are also considered.
Nominations for honorary degrees may be made at any time and can be made by anyone.
Honorary Degrees are presented at spring and fall convocation. The chancellor of the university hosts a special celebration in conjunction with convocation. Honorary degree recipients are invited to attend this event. Honorary degree recipients are also asked to give a convocation address during the ceremony when their honorary degrees are presented.
