Prof. FAN, Gang is an influential global leader with a long-standing track record and commitment to furthering China’s economic reform and strategic development. As one of China’s most prominent economists and active reform advocates, Prof. FAN, Gang’s insights into the country’s economic position and his prowess on the world stage have guided decisions within China and across the globe.
In particular, Prof. FAN, Gang has played an instrumental role in shaping Canada-China business relations since the early 1990s. He works with Canadian academia, think-tanks, and corporations. He has also presented at the annual conference of the Canada China Business Council and the Team Canada Missions to China, which resulted in significant promotion of trade and investment between the two countries.
Based in Beijing, China, Prof. FAN, Gang’s current roles include director of the National Economic Research Institute and chairman of the China Reform Foundation in Beijing, president of the China Development Institute in Shenzhen, chief economist at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, and professor of economics at Peking University and the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Prof. FAN, Gang consults to departments of the Chinese Central government and provincial government, and advises the Monetary Policy Committee of the People’s Bank of China, the Hong Kong Center for Monetary Policy, the World Bank, the Center for International Development at Harvard University, the UNDP, ESCAP and OECD among others. He has been a Fellow of the Chinese Economists Society (USA) since 1993, and a Fellow and Global Leader for Tomorrow of the World Economic Forum since 1995.
Born in Beijing in 1953, Prof. FAN, Gang earned an MA and PhD in Economics from the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He has written more than 80 academic papers, eight books and over 100 articles in newspapers and journals. He was listed as one of the World’s Top 100 Public Intellectuals jointly by Foreign Policy (USA) and Prospect (UK), 2005 and 2008, and was noted as one of the Global Thinker 100 in 2010 by Foreign Policy (USA). In 2004, he received the Founder’s Award from The Fraser Institute for his contribution to promoting market economy in China.
