Michael Real joined Royal Roads University in 2004 as a professor with the School of Communication and Culture. Real worked in the civil rights movement in the United States and served as a clergyman before completing his PhD in Communication at the University of Illinois. He worked at the University of California at San Diego, San Diego State University and Ohio University.

As an author Real has three books to his credit, including Exploring Media Culture, Mass-Mediated Culture and Super Media: A Cultural Studies Approach. His articles have appeared in academic and popular media in the Americas, Europe, and Africa and been published in more than a dozen collections.

Dr. Real has led several major research projects, including a UNESCO-sponsored project that looked at media coverage of the Olympics. He has also produced and/or hosted a variety of television and radio programs throughout his academic career.
