Gil Wilkes joined Royal Roads University in 2004, the same year he graduated with a PhD in rhetoric from Carnegie Mellon University. Wilkes is frequently called upon to comment on radio and television about one of his specialties – political messages and campaigning. Wilkes also studied speeches on race and religion during the Iowa primary in 2008, and was called on to analyze the impact of social media and rhetoric on the landslide election of Barack Obama as President of the United States in 2008. Wilkes' research also focused on Mitt Romney during his 2008 campaign for the Republican nomination for president.
