Organizational Management Project

The Organizational Management Project(OMP) forms a major part of the MBA Program, and generates a rich learning experience through the application of theory to a real-world situation. Often referred to as "action research," it enhances the skills of the student and provides a valuable contribution to the sponsoring organization.

Students will examine the issue(s), analyze options, and provide recommendations to the management team of the sponsoring organization in a final report and presentation. The scope of the project consists of approximately 188 hours  of work.

Each student is required to find an organization that is facing an important issue and requires business advice. The student's employer may sponsor a project; however students do not require a corporate sponsor to participate in the program. The University will work with those students who do not have employer sponsors to identify suitable corporate or not-for-profit organizations for their OMP.

Some students request to do their project for their own company. In practice, this is not encouraged as it is difficult to maintain objectivity. In cases where students opt to use their own company, they must designate a representative to act as the "client". The client could be a volunteer board member, founder or chairperson, or a member of the industry group representing the company. Clients are required to act and remain at arm's length from the student throughout the OMP process so that the client can remain objective.
